Buckhorn Lake and Fredricksburg

We had two fun days at Buckhorn Lake RV park and  Gil loved the Nimitz museum where we took a history walk through WWII.  Me?  I found the quaint shops way more fun.  It's similar to the Stillwater,MN area or Leavenworth, WA area.  Lots of great window shopping.  Believe me, you re-think purchases both at Costco and shops when you have such limited space..this is so good for the budget!

We headed out Friday morning for the long haul across West Texas towards Casa Grande, AZ.  We were planning to get to El Paso, but instead we drove for 10 1/2 hours and over 600 miles...what the heck...this was supposed to be relaxing!  It was just too busy with no good and/or safe RV parks in El Paso.  The morning started off a little crazy, when we dumped the dish water down the toilet because someone said this is the right thing to do with the black water tank....of course, in not checking, a spoon quickly traveled out the dish pan right into the toilet ....gone for what we think is forever!  If we find it, I'm sure no one reading the blog will ever eat at our house again!  LOL!  In packing up, the ceramic heater wasn't packed and fell in the little space where the slide pulls in.  More on that later.  Did I mention being a new-be at this RV'ing is pretty interesting.  So much to learn.

We traveled for so long we were brain numb.  We had made a reservation in Deming, TX some 600 miles from where we started.  We arrived really late, had to set up in the dark and when I put the slides went out, a really weird crunching sound took place.  I checked outside, Gil pushed on the slide and dang....the crunching?  Well, that would be the smashing of the ceramic heater between the wall and slide extension. Totally not our best day and with the temps really cold, we were sure missing that smashed heater!

We snuggled in for a much needed rest after such a long pull.  Rest at last....or so I thought.

Gil has a habit of checking his email if he can't sleep and discovered that there was a winter storm headed right to the area where we needed to go so at 3 a.m., I awoke to "we gotta get on the road".  Really?   So off we rolled, leaving a note in the door of the RV park where we hadn't even paid yet because we arrived so late!

We had 40 mph winds, tons of blowing dust and sand ahead of us with gusts to 50 mph.  If you haven't traveled in a travel trailer, you can't imagine the impact this type of wind can have on such a long rig.  It is really scary and a white-knuckle flight for sure.
