Falling in Love with Port A
February 8 - It's been a busy few days and it's only Friday! I only that because of our 'day clock'. No one ever seems to know what day it is let alone what the actual date is! I guess that is island time. We are getting six miles a day walking the beach which is so good for both of us. Unfortunately, instead of burning lots of calories, we had a peanut buster parfait at the DQ for dinner. It was so good and we chatted with a couple from New Hope, where he was a snow plow driver. He's not missing that job!
A highlight yesterday was a call from Laurie and David, who were under the web cam at Cruz Bay in St. Thomas. We could see them waving. Technology is the best. Having little Xochitl say, 'good morning Nana' is a great way to start the day too along with a video call with Maycen.
We toured the Port Aransas Museum and are having fun learning about the history of this area. The only industry in town was boat building by the Farley Boat Company. They built flat boats for using in the flats. The majority of income came from fishing. The boat company shut down for many years and just recently re-opened as a part of the museum. People can go and build their own boat using all the original boat making tools for $1700. It's pretty cool and the man who made it happen was hanging out there today, so we chatted about how he got the museum restored and the boat building. He was the lighthouse keeper until he retired and one of the guys building a boat was the former harbor master. He said he would arrange a trip by boat to the lighthouse for us next year since that is the only way you can get to the lighthouse. I'll probably be doing that while Gil is building a boat next year!
Willie has had a bath, Hoppy has taken a ride on a motorcycle and got stuck in the car window and we are having a ball. From the pictures you'll see a close-up of the blue Portuguese men-of-war, which are really very translucent with a red vein on their top, the beigy photo is the imprint left on the beach after a heavy downpour and the bush sure looked like blueberries even thought we didn't try eating them. Yoga on the beach at 8 a.m. tomorrow and then a movie at the U of Texas on Spheres in Rockport. I'm hoping it is the story of the spheres in Costa Rica. We continue to meet tons of people from MN. It's pretty amazing at how friendly everyone is....just stop along the beach and chat for 15 or 20 minutes. It's like vacation!
