Texas Hill Country!

Yes there are hills in Texas!  They even call it the 'hill country'. The area is under a severe  drought and today there was a red flag warning which means really gusty winds again.   That makes for tough driving so fortunately when we left San Antonio this morning we only had to go about an hour.  We were greated by beautiful country with lots of winding, rolling hills and we traveled to Kerrville, TX.

It's located on Interstate 10 and seems to be in the middle of nowhere when you take the exit.  We checked into the Buckhorn Lake RV park which is really super nice and one someone in Branson, MO told us about.  They have really large campsites with cement pads (yay - we're level again!) and an amazing offering of fun things to do.  We set-up and then headed to Fredricksburg about  1/2 hour away to go to the Nimitz Museum.  Admiral Nimitz, who led the Pacific forces in WWII was born in this town and there is an amazing museum dedicated to those who fought, served and lost their lives in this war.  It's very humbling and done extremely well with three huge museums.  We had forgotten from history just how far this war touched the pacific and the world.

We covered two of the  three museums today and then headed to Luckenbach, "Luckenbach Texas love song.  We thought we would have dinner here, but the town population is 3!  It's pretty funny and we had a fun time wandering around this old Texas town with a general store, bar, tons of license plates and locals who strum on their guitars and serenade us and the roosters who walk around everywhere.  You can imagine this song is the number 1 requested song around here:-)

We enjoyed our first Lone Star beers and headed back to dinner in Fredricksburg at the local brewery.  This is a really cute little town with tons of shops, a German heritage and quaint and fun restaurants.  You would need a month or more to take in all the art galleries and things  to do.  The Nimitz Museum is for sure a two day event so back we'll go tomorrow.
